I had the great honor of painting this Google doodle to commemorate Begum Akhtar on her 103rd birthday.

One of the earliest female public ghazal performers, Begum overcame great struggle in various aspects of personal and professional life, only to emerge stronger than ever—which is why I chose the phoenix pattern for her sari.

This is my first doodle, and it took a while to find my bearings. Immensely thankful to Erich Nagler for his amazing support and art direction.
